By Year 12 the content is mostly known. What separates a band 4 from a band 6 is usually technique, timing and precision under exam conditions.

So this is where tutoring shifts from teaching to coaching: less explaining, more practising, marking and correcting. The core of it is marked practice — a student writes under timed conditions, we mark it against the real HSC criteria, and we go through it line by line.

Most Year 12 students have never had a response marked the way an examiner would mark it, and the first time is usually a revelation. In English the recurring failure is a prepared essay bent to fit an unexpected question, which markers spot immediately. In maths it's losing marks on questions the student could do. Both are found by working through their own marked papers.

Adapting a thesis to an unseen question instead of forcing a prepared essay. Markers spot the latter immediately and it caps the mark.

Working backwards from the dates
Planning from trials and the HSC timetable rather than the current topic, so revision finishes before it's urgent.

How it's assessed

Year 12 combines school-based assessment with the external HSC examination. Trial examinations usually fall in Term 3, with the HSC examinations following in October and November. The ATAR requires at least 10 units including 2 units of English.
