A student who drifts through Year 10 maths has quietly closed the door on Advanced and Extension in Year 11, without anyone announcing it.

Year 7 is a harder change than most families expect: one teacher becomes eight, daily work becomes assessments due in three weeks. Plenty of capable students stumble here for organisational reasons rather than academic ones, and the two are easy to confuse. Working out which it actually is comes first.

By Years 9 and 10 the stakes are concrete. Stage 5 results feed the RoSA and, more consequentially, determine which Year 11 courses are realistic. In maths this is where algebra stops being arithmetic with letters; in English, where the demand shifts from recount to analysis. Both shifts need teaching rather than time.

How it's assessed

Years 7 and 9 sit NAPLAN. From Year 9, results contribute to the Record of School Achievement, and Year 10 performance determines which Year 11 courses are available — including whether Mathematics Advanced and Extension are realistic. The HSC minimum standard tests can be attempted from Year 10.
